HP Reverb G2 revealed

Reverb G2

The HP Reverb G2 is an upcoming VR headset, it was announced end March, and will be made in collaboration with Microsoft and Valve. That and a picture of the product was the only thing we knew until today.

Today HP released some more information about the product:
The resolution is 2160×2160 each eye (same as the HP Reverb), significantly higher than it’s competitors (Oculus Rift S has 1280×1440, even the $1000 Valve Index only has a 1600×1440 resolution), with a 90hz refresh rate and field of view of 114 degrees. It is going to have the same speakers as the Valve Index.
The biggest changes compared to the current HP Reverb is that the new HP is going to feature a mechanical adjustable IPD, is going to have 4 tracking cameras instead of 2 and is going to support SteamVR as well as Windows Mixed Reality. HP also claims that the new display is brighter than the previous headset and has no screen-door effect.

The video gives us 6 interesting selling points:

  • Valve designed lenses
  • High resolution (2160×2160)
  • Valve designed speakers
  • Mechanical adjustable IPD (60-68mm)
  • 4 Cameras for better tracking
  • 6 Meter cable

You can pre-order the headset for $599 and it is going to be released in fall in the US. Other countries will be able to pre-order the headset on mid June.

The high resolution will make it so that you’ll be able to see very fine details like small text, which perfect for sim enthusiasts, however, to play games on 4320×2160 at 90hz you’ll need a very beefy graphics card for most games, HP recommend a minimum of a GTX 1080 with an I7 processor, but to get any decent FPS in most games you’ll most like need something more like a RTX 2080 ti, which is like an unaffordable $1300. So it seems like the VR headset market is way ahead of the GPU market.
